Frequently asked questions

Short answers about exports, missing files and how the comparison works.

How do I check who unfollowed me on Instagram?
Instagram doesn't show unfollowers anywhere — no notification, no list. The reliable way is to compare two snapshots: export your followers from Meta's Accounts Center, save the list, then export again a few weeks later and compare old vs new. Whoever is missing from the fresh list unfollowed you.

Our step-by-step guide shows exactly how, including a trick to do the old-vs-new comparison right here on WhoLeft.
Can I see who unfollowed me without an app?
Yes — you don't need any third-party app. Apps that ask for your Instagram password violate Meta's terms and are a common reason accounts get banned. Instead, use Instagram's official data export and compare the files in your browser with WhoLeft: no install, no login, and your lists never leave your device. Start with the illustrated export guide, then drop the files in on the home page.
My result looks wrong — way too many people show as not following back. Why?
Almost always one export file is missing. Instagram splits large follower lists into several files like followers_1.html, followers_2.html and so on. If you only uploaded part 1, everyone in the missing parts looks like a non-follower.

Fix: open your export folder, count how many followers_*.html files there are, and drop all of them at once into the Followers box. WhoLeft merges them automatically and shows a combined count.
I did not select the full period when I created my download. Does that matter?
Yes. If you picked a date range in Instagram's export wizard, your files only contain the data from that window. A partial range can truncate the follower and following lists, which throws off the comparison.

Fix: request a new export and choose the full period / all time when asked. If All time isn't available, set the range manually with a start date several years back so your full follower history is included. The export usually takes a few minutes to a couple of hours. Once the email arrives, upload the fresh files here and the result will rebuild correctly.
There is no "All time" option in my export — what do I do?
Set the date range manually instead: pick a custom range and set the start date several years back — around when you created your account — with today as the end date.

What matters is that the range covers your entire follower history: a range that starts later will silently cut off older followers, and everyone missing from the list shows up as a non-follower. After re-exporting, upload all the fresh files here and the result will rebuild correctly.
How do I check if I have more than one followers list?
Open the folder where your export was unpacked and go into the followers_and_following folder. If you see followers_1.html plus followers_2.html (or more), you have several parts.

There is no downside to uploading all of them together — duplicates are removed automatically, and the box shows the merged total so you can sanity-check it against the file sizes.
Which files does WhoLeft accept?
HTML, JSON, CSV and TXT exports from Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), Threads and YouTube. For Instagram, the files are called followers_1.html and following.html inside the followers_and_following folder of your export.
Is my data uploaded to a server?
No. Everything is parsed and compared entirely inside your browser. The files are never uploaded, never stored, and are discarded from memory as soon as you close or refresh the tab. See the privacy policy for details.
The result says 0 users found. What went wrong?
You most likely selected the wrong file. WhoLeft needs the follower and following lists from your export — not the "personal information" file, profile HTML, or media files. On Instagram, look inside the followers_and_following folder and pick followers_1.html (plus any other parts) and following.html.
Someone shows as not following back, but they actually do. How is that possible?
Three common reasons:

1. An export file is missing or partial (see the first question above).
2. The export is a snapshot — if someone followed you after you requested the download, they are not in it. Re-export freshly.
3. They changed their handle between exports, so the same person appears as two different users.

Re-export both lists at the same time and upload all files together for an accurate snapshot.
The follower count here differs from what Instagram shows me. Why?
Instagram's public count includes private, deactivated and restricted accounts whose names are not included in the export file. The export only contains what Instagram actually ships, so small differences are normal and not an error. What matters for accuracy is that all parts of the export are uploaded.
Does it work with Facebook, TikTok, X, Threads or YouTube too?
Yes. Create an export on the platform (usually under settings → "Download your information"), then drop the followers and following files here. The comparison works exactly the same way. For Instagram, the step-by-step guide with screenshots walks you through the export.
Do I need an account? Is it free?
It is free and there is no login, signup or email required. Drop the files in, read the result, done. If you find it useful, you can buy the developer a coffee.
