How to See Who Doesn't Follow You Back on Instagram

A free, no-login, no-app method — published 2026-06-25

You don't need a sketchy third-party app or your Instagram password to figure out who isn't following you back. Instagram itself gives you the data — you just have to ask for it. This guide walks through the whole thing in about 15 minutes (most of which is waiting for Meta's email).

TL;DR
  1. Request your Instagram followers + following export from Meta.
  2. Wait for the email, download the ZIP, unzip it.
  3. Drop the two files into WhoLeft — it compares them in your browser.

Why not just use a follower-tracker app?

Apps that promise to show non-followers usually ask for your Instagram login. That violates Meta's Terms of Use, exposes your account to credential theft, and is the single most common way Instagram accounts get banned for "suspicious activity." There is no legitimate Instagram API endpoint that exposes another user's followers list without consent — so any app claiming to "scan" your followers is either lying or scraping with your stolen session.

The safer path is the official one: Meta lets you download your own follower data for free. You then compare it yourself.

Step 1 — Request your data from Meta

  1. Go to Accounts Center → Download your information (works on desktop and mobile).
  2. Pick just your Instagram account — not Facebook — so the file stays small.
  3. Choose "Some of your information", then under Connections tick Followers and Following. Untick everything else.
  4. Date range: All time. Format: HTML (easiest to read) or JSON (smaller). Either works with WhoLeft.
  5. Submit the request.

Step 2 — Wait for the email

Meta will email you a download link, usually within a few minutes for just followers/following. It can take longer if their servers are busy. The link expires after a few days, so download the ZIP soon after it arrives.

Step 3 — Unzip the file

Inside the ZIP, open the connections/followers_and_following folder. You're looking for two files:

  • followers_1.html (or followers_1.json) — people who follow you
  • following.html (or following.json) — people you follow

Step 4 — Compare them with WhoLeft

Open WhoLeft and drop both files into the upload boxes. That's it — the page compares the two lists entirely in your browser and gives you:

  • Not following back — people you follow who don't follow you
  • Fans — people who follow you but you don't follow back
  • Mutuals — everyone who follows both ways

Each handle links straight to the profile, so you can decide whether to unfollow. WhoLeft never uploads, stores, or shares your follower lists — everything stays on your device.

Does this work on other platforms?

Yes. WhoLeft also reads exports from Facebook, TikTok, X (Twitter), Threads, and YouTube. The same upload-and-compare flow works for any platform that lets you download your own followers/following lists.

FAQ

Is there a free way to see who doesn't follow you back on Instagram?

Yes. Instagram lets you export your followers and following lists for free. WhoLeft compares those two files locally in your browser, so the whole thing is free and login-free.

Do I have to give a third-party app my Instagram password?

No, and you shouldn't. Any app asking for your Instagram login violates Meta's terms and puts your account at risk of being banned. The export-and-compare method never touches your password.

Is it safe? Where does my data go?

WhoLeft parses the export files entirely in your browser. The follower lists are never uploaded, never stored, and are gone when you close the tab. See our Privacy Policy for details.

How long does the Instagram export take?

Usually a few minutes for just followers and following. Meta sends an email with the download link when it's ready.

Can I do this on my phone?

Yes. Request the export from the Instagram app, download the ZIP on your phone, unzip it (iOS and Android both have built-in unzip), and open WhoLeft in your mobile browser to upload the two files.

Ready to find out who left?

Upload your two files and see the result in seconds. 100% local, no login.
